The word “graffio” means “a scratch.”  Poetic Graffiti— is a dedication to Cornbread, Taki 183 and youth of the 1960s and 1970s, for whom graffiti and tagging were crucial outlets for self-expression, a means of personal branding, a means to make their mark in a culture and a society that did not necessarily have a place for such self-expression.

The salon title is also a riff off Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti.

Poetic Graffiti is about externalizing one’s identity onto a surface, making one’s mark literally, but also negotiating one’s space within society, whether it is through written or spoken word, visual art or a site-specific installation, the fundamental act of changing a space with your tag, your signature is a deeply personal and individualistic moment, before it gets out into society where it is received and shared. The act of communicating one’s place in the world, is also an act of poetry. Life and all the preoccupations of it have been poetry’s constant and universal muse.

To elevate ourselves and our lives as worthy of an art form, is very much what the salons are about. Hence, the title Poetic Graffiti.
